Guest speaker will be author Mark Johnson, talking about his debut novel and how he came to write it. Changing Trains will transport you back to the 1980s, and one working class boy's coming-of-age journey of discovery and sexual self-awareness.After a busy week in the newsroom, editor Sam is looking forward to relaxing on his regular Eurostar journey from London to his second home in the south west of France. But a chance encounter at the busy station compels him back to a time in the 1980s, when he travelled parts of Europe by train alone and in search of adventure, self-discovery and his place in the world.

In a sun-kissed, coming-of-age story set in a time just before mobile devices, the internet and social media, Sam travels across Europe, with its varied currencies, border controls and strange cultures, keen to better understand his own nature and his relationship with others in a new, emerging world.

Mark Johnson is a Scottish born journalist, writer and broadcaster. He's spent most of his career covering the financial markets in the City of London and around the world. He now lives between London and New Aquitaine in France, traveling often by Eurostar and TGV and longs for the day when he doesn’t have to ‘change trains’ to get to the south west.

Sanderstead's gay rights campaigner Peter Wells was 26, his partner was 18. Because this was 1974 when the gay age of consent was 21, he was sentenced to two and a half years in jail. Scandal engulfed his partner, too. From his cell, Wells launched the first European Court of Human Rights challenge to the discrimination in the different ages of consent. The case was pioneering stuff, needing several more cases building on his work to finally get success in the late 1990s..He played a key role in creating a path to legal equality for LGBT people, yet his story is almost unknown. Born in Bristol but adopted as a baby, Wells lived his whole life in Sanderstead. To book your place call Library on 020 3700 1034.

Wednesday at 8pm at the Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, SE15. This month's Malteser Question is: What colour is an aircraft's Black Box? The first person to hand me a slip of paper with the right answer on Wednesday wins a packet of Maltesers!

We've had two ideas for making the quiz more exciting and decide by a simple vote on Wednesday. Firstly, when a team seems to be getting dominant and wins two quzzes in succession, we'd like to handicap them by 5 points at the third quiz; if they go on to win that one as well, add another five points handicap etc. We want to give more teams a fair chance of winning

Secondly, now that numbers are running at about 40 people/10 teams a time, we'd like to reserve some of the winnings (say £25) for a rollover. So the winning team each month would have a chance of competing for the rollover as well, and if they didn't get it, it would go forward again.
